Prayers to pray before sleep

The end of the day is one of the holiest hours in the Christian tradition — the hour of compline, the hour of letting go. These prayers are short, ancient, and meant to be prayed in bed, with the lights low. They turn the day over to God, ask his keeping through the night, and close the gap between sleep and trust.

Nunc Dimittis

Luke 2:29-32

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace,
according to thy word.

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
which thou hast prepared
before the face of all people;

A light to lighten the Gentiles,
and the glory of thy people Israel.

Amen.

Psalm 91

Psalm 91 (KJV, abridged)

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress:
my God; in him will I trust.

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,
and from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with his feathers,
and under his wings shalt thou trust:
his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night;
nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness;
nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge,
even the most High, thy habitation;
there shall no evil befall thee.

Amen.

The Examen

I pause and become aware of God's presence.
I look at my day with gratitude — for the gifts, large and small.

I ask the Spirit to help me see my day clearly,
not as I wish to remember it but as it was.

I review the hours: where was I drawn toward love?
Where did I turn away?

I bring what I find — the joys, the failures —
to God, asking forgiveness where I need it
and giving thanks where I can.

I look toward tomorrow,
asking for grace to meet what comes.

Amen.

Psalm 23

Psalm 23 (KJV)

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
for ever.

Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Matthew 6:9-13

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever.

Amen.

If you can only manage one line, pray it: "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace." That is enough.
